HTB Discipleship YEAR

WHAT IS THE HTB DISCIPLESHIP YEAR?

The HTB Discipleship Year is an opportunity to invest a year of your life to grow in your relationship with God, maximise your leadership potential, and experience ministry at the heart of HTB.

Through a combination of theology, leadership training, mission, encounter, and hands-on ministry experience, our prayer is that this year would lay a foundation for you to live a life sold out for Jesus, impacting culture and transforming society in whatever sphere you end up in.

The HTB Discipleship Year runs from Monday 10 September 2018 until Sunday 31 July 2019, and applications are open to anyone aged 18-24 at the start of the course.

Applications close 30 June 2018.

For questions and any further information, please feel free to email the team.

WHAT does it involve?

The HTB Discipleship Year is an 11-month programme of leadership and discipleship training and a church-based work placement.

It consists of four to five days per week, depending on your placement choice, and will involve a mixture of teaching, studying, serving, and your ministry placement.

Each week will contain the following components:

  • Receiving teaching and input in the classroom
  • Serving in ministry placements
  • Studying, reading, and completing assignments
  • Outreach at Alpha or the HTB Shelter
  • Serving at one HTB Sunday Service

Ministry placements are an opportunity to gain first-hand ministry experience in one of 10 departments at HTB:

As part of the programme, students will also:

  • Meet regularly with a mentor
  • Attend two Discipleship Year weekends away
  • Serve at key HTB conferences and events, including Leadership Conference and Focus
  • Go on an (optional) overseas mission trip

WHAT WILL I BE LEARNING?

Our teaching content is designed to deepen your walk with Jesus and develop your capacity as a leader. We gather for together twice a week to eat together, worship, and receive input from an array of speakers from HTB and beyond, including Nicky and Pippa Gumbel, Pete Wynter, Stephen Foster, Will van der Hart, Martyn and Emily Layzell, and the HTB Leadership Team.

On our teaching days, we’ll focus on three main areas: Theology and the Bible, Discipleship and Spiritual Growth, and Leadership. on discipleship and spiritual growth – our speakers will impart their expertise in a number of core subjects from identity, emotional health, spiritual disciplines and our inward life to evangelism, social justice, and ministering in the power of the Holy Spirit.

There’ll be plenty of opportunity to grow outside of the classroom too. Students complete regular assignments, and read a number of books throughout the year. You will also be assigned a mentor and a have great community of fellow students to journey with as you grow as a leader and as a disciple of Jesus.

We believe that growth should be hands-on, so students will spend three hours per week serving in outreach projects. This could be helping people explore faith at Alpha, or giving time to the homeless at the HTB Shelter.

Finally, all students will serve at one service on Sundays to invest in the life of HTB. You’ll also attend one service as a congregation member, so that you can be fully integrated into our church community.

WHAT MINISTRY PLACEMENTS ARE THERE?

Ministry Placements are designed to give students the opportunity to experience ministry at the heart of the local church by being allocated placements in a one of ten departments at HTB.

WHAT ARE THE DATES?

The term dates for the 2018-2019 year are:

  • Term One: Monday 10 September to Sunday 16 December
  • Term Two: Sunday 6 January to Sunday 31 March
  • Term Three: Sunday 21 April to Sunday 28 July

Your timetable will vary from placement to placement, and may involve some evenings. As a minimum, students will be in from Monday to Wednesday, and for one service on Sundays. Full-time students will be in from Monday to Thursday, and for one service on Sundays.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost for the HTB Discipleship Year is £750. This helps to cover course material, books, breakfasts, retreats and other costs. Students will need to pay the fee in full before the course starts.

There will be an optional overseas mission-trip during the year, which students will be required to fundraise for.

Students are responsible for their own accommodation and living costs. You may be able to work a part-time job alongside the course, but we strongly recommend either working in the months prior to the programme commencing or raising your own financial support to cover your costs for the year. While HTB can help in your search for a house in London, we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to find you any accommodation ourselves.

Some scholarships will be available for students who would otherwise not be able to afford the year – please indicate on your application form to discuss this further.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Applications are open to anyone aged 18-24 at the start of the course.

If your initial application is successful, you’ll be invited for an interview with the HTB Discipleship Year Pastor.

After the interview, we may invite you for a second interview with your ministry placement leader. After this we will make a decision as to whether we feel this year is right for you.

Applications will close on 31 June 2018, but spaces are limited so we recommend applying sooner rather than later.
